Join the River Festival walks team as we meander along intimate footpaths, stride across farmland, stroll through woodland and amble along the riverbank discovering what makes the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty so special. Along the way we will be joined by artists, poets, historians, foodies, paddlers and wild swimmers who will share their passion for the area and awaken you to the simple pleasures of slow travel. You can choose to book a single leg of the walk or undertake the whole challenge, staying in local accommodation.
This is the third day in a series of 4 day walks from Hereford to Monmouth. On this section we will clock up 9 miles from Ross On Wye to Lydbrook entitled ‘The Wye Tour’. Led by local guides from Chepstow Walkers Are Welcome, you will discover the rich heritage of this special landscape, which has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Local historian Heather Hurley will join you along the route with stories from the past. The walk will start in Ross On Wye at the old town dock, the traditional start of the Picturesque Wye Tour, where we will give a jolly send off to a flotilla of artists, in vintage boats making the journey by river. Paddlers, artists and walkers will have the opportunity to meet up in the evening for some creative exchanges over a pint in Hope and Anchor in Ross. Actors from the River Festival Ensemble will also perform this year’s travelling play, Cuckoo Time.
The meeting point for the start of the day is just outside Lydbrook (GL17 9LR). Please park in the layby opposite the entrance to the old factory near the river Wye (see map). Transport will be provided from the car park to the start of the walk. The walk will finish back at Lydbrook allowing you freedom to find your own accommodation if you wish to continue on the next day’s walk. Please bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink and wear suitable walking attire – walking boots, wet weather clothing and sunscreen in case the sun shines! For those who wish to stay overnight in the area you can find accommodation here:
