We step back in time for this illustrated talk by Dr Suzanne Matheson from the University of Windsor, Ontario in Canada, who is an expert in early tourism to Tintern Abbey. The Abbey has been attracting visitors for over 250 years. In the late 18th century the Abbey was the highlight of The Picturesque Wye Tour, a two-day boat trip down the river from Ross on Wye to Chepstow. It was popularised by William Gilpin, who took the Tour 250 years ago, in 1770, and wrote a best-selling guide Observations on the River Wye. This is a rare opportunity to hear Dr Matheson speak in the UK and find out about the keepers of the keys to the Abbey!
